C-section during labor

What happens if a C-section is needed in labor?

Your doctor or midwife is trained to pick up problems that can occur in labor. If a Cesarean is needed during labor you will be moved to the operating room. Depending on the reason, your partner or support person may go with you to the operating room.

If a general anesthetic is used you would not be awake. Your partner or support people would stay in your labor room until you return.

What happens to the baby if I need a C-section?

You and your baby will stay together whenever possible. After the surgery you would either be moved to a recovery area or back to your labor room. If all is well with the baby, you can cuddle up skin to skin and breastfeed if you want to.

Can I change my mind about VBAC once labor has started?

Yes, you are able to change your mind if it is safe to do so. If you decide after labor has started that you do not want to continue to labor and want a Cesarean, this will still be an option for you.

Having a Cesarean during labor can involve more risks than a planned Cesarean.

If you reach a point in labor where you are too close to the birth of your baby to have a Cesarean your provider will discuss this you.
