Possible scar problems

What are the chances of scar tear during planned VBAC?

The risk of the scar tearing depends on your prior Cesarean. The type of incision (cut) made on your uterus and the total number of Cesareans you have had is important. You should discuss this with your doctor or midwife.

The chance of the scar tearing is small. Around 1 in 200 women with one previous C-section will have a separation or tear of the uterine scar.

If the scar on the uterus tears, your doctor may need to perform an urgent Cesarean. Even under the best hospital conditions, there is still a risk of injury to the baby. The chance of permanent brain injury or death of the baby as a result of uterine tear during a planned  VBAC is around 1 in 1000.
